Helping you understand your gemstone
Colour and appearance are only part of a gemstone’s identity. A laboratory report provides a structured description of an examined stone, recording its identifying characteristics alongside measurements and observations. At GTLRSC, the report is the central record of that examination.
Whether you are reviewing a stone for your personal collection, checking a certificate supplied with a purchase, or keeping documentation for a jewellery business, understanding the report helps you compare the information associated with the gemstone.
Identity and description
Gem identification reports record the variety and species or group assigned to the examined specimen. They also describe physical characteristics such as colour, shape and cut, weight and dimensions.
These details work together to describe the stone. Read the complete report, including comments, rather than relying on the gemstone name alone.
Methods listed on our reports
The laboratory’s report letterhead lists refractive index (R.I.), specific gravity (S.G.), magnification, ultraviolet fluorescence and absorption spectrum among its examination methods.
The findings, identification and comments recorded on an individual report relate to the specimen examined. Refer to that report for the observations available for your gemstone.
Read the findings in context
Comments and specific observations form an important part of a gemstone report. Where recorded, these may include statements concerning treatment or other characteristics relevant to the identification.
Not every report contains the same information. An empty field should not be treated as a test result or an additional conclusion.
What your report can contain
The issued reports available through this website bring the following information together. The fields completed depend on the individual report.
- Report number and dateThe reference used to locate the report and the date recorded on it.
- Specimen descriptionItem description, colour, weight, dimensions, shape and cut.
- IdentificationGemstone variety and species or group, as recorded by the laboratory.
- Photograph and observationsA specimen photograph, where included, together with comments and specific findings.
Your report, available by number
Enter the complete report number printed on your certificate into the verification form. When the report is available online, the website displays its recorded details and original report layout.
Compare the report number, date, identity, weight, dimensions and comments with your certificate. A photograph, where present, provides an additional visual reference. Online lookup confirms the available report record; identifying a physical stone requires examination of that specimen.
